Of couse everybody’s heard of and uses Google.com. It’s a great search engine. But there are other search engines that produce different results, and some strikingly different results at that. Here are a few new and different search engines.

New Kids on the Block

• http://www.clusty.com – Yes, I know. Funny name, but it’s a unique search engine that categorizes results in a way that might click for you.
• http://www.soople.com – A personal favorite, this little ditty just takes the major bells and whistles of Google (that many people don’t know about) and spreads them across one easy-to-navigate page.

• http://www.kwmap.net – Searches through keyword mapping, hence the name.
• http://www.panabee.com – This cool tool allows you to compare results between two search engines simultaneously.
• http://www.searchboth.com – Similarly, this one lets you choose between Google and Yahoo at the same time.
• http://www.blackdog.ie/google-bing/ – Search Google and Bing at the same time and compare results.
• http://www.Phrases.net – Another great, though relatively obscure look-up tool is this site, which allows users to find definitions for particular idioms and expressions. Cool for bibliophiles like moi.

• http://www.collecta.com/ – Collecta searches for results in “real time.” From their website verbatim, “Collecta monitors the update streams of news sites, popular blogs and social media, so we can show you results as they happen. Give it a try.”
• http://www.frienddeck.com/ – Friend Deck is an aggregator built on Friend Feed.
• http://www.scitopia.org/scitopia/- “Search over 3.5 million documents, plus patents and government data. Twenty One societies spanning 350 years of sci-tech scholarship help you with your queries.”
• http://www.yacktrack.com/home – Trace “yackability.” This search engine searches the web for comments or references to a specific URL or website or web address.

Meta Search Engines

• http://www.DogPile.com – An unfortunately named but fairly decent meta-search engine (it scans multiple search engines to deliver results). Each one of these “meta” search engines will give uniquely divergent results and cross-reference different search engines. For example, some will combine Google with Bing, while others will use more search engines in their results.
• http://www.Mamma.com – Cute name and logo. Decent meta-search engine.

• http://www.Ask -  Also known as AskJeeves, this meta-search engine is fairly well-known but it’s hard to pinpoint exactly how it gets its results.
• http://www.MetaCrawler.com – This “meta” search engine cross-references Ask.com, Google, Yahoo, and MSN/Bing search engines.

News Search Engines

If you’ re anything like me (and I apologize if you are), you’re a newshound. I love this category of search engines because I want to know everything at once. These don’t let you know all that, but at least provide the illusion and some bring you somewhat close.

• http://fastflip.googlelabs.com – This great experimental Google application from Google Labs, allows you to flip through the world’s top newspaper headlines very quickly. Way cool.
