Media What?
Lots of people wonder how Media Relations and Public Relations differ. Aren’t they the same thing, with different labels?
The short answer is: Nope. Media Relations, quite simply, is the act of interacting with media professionals and their “chain of command,” and
doing so in a manner appropriate to their industry. Public Relations is the act of essentially packaging (as attractively as possible) material, whatever it may be, in a manner that is easily digested and understood by the public at-large.
For example, Barack Obama, when he was a candidate for President, was a master of this (or perhaps you could say his team was masterful at executing this approach). His message was short and sweet: Change. It was easily digestible and much desired. People with advanced academic degrees to people without a formal education understood his message of Hope. The Obama logo was that of a sun arising from a hilly horizon. It represented a new dawn, literally. Even if you never heard a word out of Obama’s mouth, you’d know his message from the campaign’s well-crafted packaging.
After having worked for several local area campaigns, and after having worked as a reporter and marketing copywriter for twenty years, I know how to build relationships with local area media to benefit you now.
